Not Dead, But Sleeping Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDC EFGF HIII JIKI LMNM OGPG QIRI SFTU GFKF

To the memory of Edwin B Foster a member of the Howards who nobly sacrificed his own life for others and in remembrance of those unknown to fame or friends who have silently followed in the steps of our SaviourA
-
-
-
The shadow of death is around us allB
And life is a sorrowful thingC
For the winds sweep by with a mournful sighD
And sad are the tidings they bringC
-
He is dead and the strong brave life that he gaveE
Seemed offered to God in vainF
Yet he died Christ like in a labor of loveG
'Mid sorrow and death and painF
-
And why should we sorrow the crown is hisH
And the glory of life is wonI
Though he died when his labor was just begunI
Yet the work of his life is doneI
-
The beautiful South is a land of deathJ
Where the shadows darken the sunI
And the moans of the dying are heard in the nightK
When the deeds of the day are doneI
-
The sunlight falls with a dreary gleamL
On the cities where ruin is spreadM
And the rain beats down with a mournful soundN
On the graves of the silent deadM
-
Yet high in the heavens a Hand is stretchedO
That treasures the deeds of loveG
And the lives gone out in the darkness belowP
Are wrapped in the glory aboveG
-
The North bends down in her icy prideQ
And kisses the land of the sunI
Love joins them both in a flood of tearsR
And the glory of peace is wonI
-
The hand that was dyed in a brother's bloodS
Now eases that brother's painF
And the hearts that in life were driven apartT
In death are united againU
-
Then why should we sorrow our God is loveG
And lives are not lived in vainF
Bright hope still shines like a star of nightK
In the shadow of death and painF
