O beautiful woman too well we knowA
The terrible weight of thy woman's woeA
So great that the world in its careless wayB
Remembered thy beauty for more than a dayB
In the name of the truth from thy brow is tornC
The crown of redemption thou long hast wornC
And into the valley of sin thou art hurledD
To be trampled anew by the feet of the worldD
-
The beautiful picture is thine no moreE
That hangs in the palace on Italy's shoreE
The tear stained eyes where the shadow liesF
Like a darksome cloud in the summer skiesF
Will tell thy story to men no moreE
For all untrue is the tale of yoreE
And the far famed picture that hangs on the wallG
Is a painter's fancy that is allG
-
Italia's shore is a land of lightH
Where the sunlight of day drowns the shadows of nightH
And the great warm sun with his golden raysI
Imprisons the light of eternal daysI
But the tale of thy woes is a shadow thereJ
That fills with its horror the perfumed airJ
-
By day and by night in the palace thereJ
Thy picture has hung with its face so fairJ
Beguiling the travelers come from afarK
With its sad sweet grace like some voiceless starK
Till the hears that shuddered before thy sinL
Recalled not the shadow that lay withinL
But remembered only with pitying graceM
The hopeless grief on the child like faceM
-
The rosy dawn with its misty lightH
Shone fair on thy brow in the morning brightH
And the glittering noon with its rays of goldN
Imprisoned thy soul in its jeweled holdN
-
Oh fair was the picture at early dawnO
With the matchless beauty that Guido had drawnO
And fair was the face in the noon of goldN
Touched with a glory that never grew oldN
-
But lovelier still in the shadowed eyesF
Lay the burning sunset of Italy's skiesF
And the beautiful face with its voiceless woeA
Grew fair as a saint's in the crimson glowA
No wonder the poets grew wild at the sightH
And sung of thy beauty with mad delightH
Till the fame of the picture spread over the landP
Revealing the touch of its master handP
-
The fair Madonna with saint like faceM
Creation of Raphael's exquisite graceM
Is scarcely more famed than the child like headQ
Of thou to whom sorrow forever is wedQ
O beautiful woman the world with its scornC
Will mock at the glory thou long hast wornC
And rend aside in the name of the truthR
The veil of mercy that hides thy youthR
But the romance that clings to the wondrous faceM
Will fall on our hearts with a softened graceM
And the fair young sinner on Italy's shoreE
Will be loved and pitied forevermoreE
