A Shell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDD EFEFGGHH BIBIEEJJ IKIKEELL

Oh take this shell this pretty thingA
With tinted waves of pearly redB
Hold close your ear and hear it singA
Then tell me what its voice hath saidB
A song of surges deep and strongC
A song of summer sweet and longC
A sound of storm and wind and rainD
A sound of joy a glad refrainD
-
O plaything of the idle seaE
Whence come these changing tints of thineF
Have sunset clouds looked down on theeE
And stained thee with their hues divineF
Oh tell the secrets thou must knowG
Of clouds above and waves belowG
Oh whisper of the bending skyH
And ocean caves where jewels lieH
-
O beauteous sea shell tinged with redB
What dost thou know what canst thou tellI
Unto what mysteries are thou wedB
Thou fragile thing thou pearly shellI
A whisper of the sounding seaE
A sweep of surges strong and freeE
A tale of life a tale of deathJ
A warm bright sin an icy breathJ
-
Ah more than this thou lovely shellI
Thy years have gathered from the deepK
And more than this thy voice can tellI
Of things learned in that ocean sleepK
A grave within the lonely seaE
A spot where love can never beE
A place where tears may never fallL
A lonely grave and that is allL
