They say that the old die at least that is what I was toldA
When I was youngB
Before I grew oldA
I told mama I would make her proudC
I told papa I would touch the cloudsD
I had my draftsE
They had their plansF
In warm embrace and streaming tearsG
they released me into the worldH
With as much blessings as their hand could conceiveI
I wish they only told me early enoughJ
that the spade man would come for meK
-
In this world I was released intoL
The spade man taught me to bear painM
The spade man taught me to love fearN
The spade man told me to hushO
As long as the sun rose and fellP
My story I could not tellP
Only if I knewL
if time was not too fastQ
If date not unpredictableR
If chance not chancedQ
I would have seen the spade man diggingS
-
The spade man told me to hushO
I said noT
He or maybe she told me to love fearN
My body though weak put a pound of strengthU
I thought with it I could keep the spade man awayV
He told me to bear painM
How could I at understand such gameW
They say you didn't speak upX
But I didQ
Ask the sun and the moon they knew my plightQ
Nature may even tell it betterY
I fought I tried I was just not strong enoughJ
I never knew the young also dieQ
-
This time the sun roseZ
I did not see it fall my story I could not tellP
My shrivelled legs failedQ
My heart achedQ
My face bruisedQ
My joints painedQ
My dreams were goneA2
My drafts were tornB2
-
Who shall touch the clouds for papaC2
Who shall make mama proudQ
On whom shall I bestow this this enormous task I thought I could bearD2
Say farewell to my family they've lost a favourite childQ
Send my greetings to the Delta people they've lost a sonE2
Send more greetings to the south their lush soil has swallowed their ownF2
Send a kiss to Nigeria one from her loins departsG2
Send the world a letter of my demise make sure you writeQ
it is one of those cases of an abused child maybe she will handle it seriously this timeH2
-
And now as I slumber an eternal oneE2
I wish I could reach out to that spade man called deathI2
I would strangle him with my bare handsJ2
With the innocency of an infantQ
I would push him down into the pit he digsK2
With the frailty of a childQ
I would cover you up with soil and stonesL2
Ashes and dead flowersM2
With tears in my eyesN2
I will confessO2
I cannot hush death I cannot hushO

Poet's note: This poem, The spade man says hush! was written in 2021, December. it is an ode to Sylvester Oromoni, the Delta state boy who died tragically. This poem brings to light the matter of bullying and physical abuse and how the bullied feels. the bullied is a normal human being who has great dreams and aspirations, much expecations from friends, and the world at large, but the spade man, the one who digs his death plans great mischief. The determination of the bullied is recognised in the poem, despite this, the bullied still dies, but wishes that there was another chance whereby he would teach the spade man a lesson and this time, it would be the spade man that dies. The spade man says hush! relates the pain of people who have or are being bullied, physically abused, assulted and so on and how the world adresses it.
