Ah dans ces mornes s egrave joursA
Les jamais sont les toujoursA
Paul VerlaineB
-
You would have understood me had you waitedC
I could have loved you dear as well as heD
Had we not been impatient dear and fatedE
Always to disagreeD
-
What is the use of speech Silence were fitterF
Lest we should still be wishing things unsaidG
Though all the words we ever spake were bitterF
Shall I reproach you deadG
-
Nay let this earth your portion likewise coverF
All the old anger setting us apartH
Always in all in truth was I your loverF
Always I held your heartH
-
I have met other women who were tenderF
As you were cold dear with a grace as rareI
Think you I turned to them or made surrenderF
I who had found you fairI
-
Had we been patient dear ah had you waitedC
I had fought death for you better than heD
But from the very first dear we were fatedE
Always to disagreeD
-
Late late I come to you now death disclosesA
Love that in life was not to be our partH
On your low lying mound between the rosesA
Sadly I cast my heartH
-
I would not waken you nay this is fitterF
Death and the darkness give you unto meD
Here we who loved so were so cold and bitterF
Hardly can disagreeD
