Nuns Of The Perpetual Adoration Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Calm sad secure behind high convent wallsA
These watch the sacred lamp these watch and prayB
And it is one with them when evening fallsA
And one with them the cold return of dayB
-
These heed not time their nights and days they makeC
Into a long returning rosaryD
Whereon their lives are threaded for Christ's sakeC
Meekness and vigilance and chastityD
-
A vowed patrol in silent companiesE
Life long they keep before the living ChristF
In the dim church their prayers and penancesE
Are fragrant incense to the SacrificedF
-
Outside the world is wild and passionateG
Man's weary laughter and his sick despairH
Entreat at their impenetrable gateI
They heed no voices in their dream of prayerH
-
They saw the glory of the world displayedJ
They saw the bitter of it and the sweetK
They knew the roses of the world should fadeJ
And be trod under by the hurrying feetK
-
Therefore they rather put away desireL
And crossed their hands and came to sanctuaryD
And veiled their heads and put on coarse attireL
Because their comeliness was vanityD
-
And there they rest they have serene insightM
Of the illuminating dawn to beD
Mary's sweet Star dispels for them the nightM
The proper darkness of humanityD
-
Calm sad secure with faces worn and mildN
Surely their choice of vigil is the bestO
Yea for our roses fade the world is wildN
But there beside the altar there is restO
