Extreme Unction Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGFG HIHI JFKF

Upon the eyes the lips the feetA
On all the passages of senseB
The atoning oil is spread with sweetA
Renewal of lost innocenceC
-
The feet that lately ran so fastD
To meet desire are soothly sealedE
The eyes that were so often castD
On vanity are touched and healedE
-
From troublous sights and sounds set freeF
In such a twilight hour of breathG
Shall one retrace his life or seeF
Through shadows the true face of deathG
-
Vials of mercy Sacring oilsH
I know not where nor when I comeI
Nor through what wanderings and toilsH
To crave of you ViaticumI
-
Yet when the walls of flesh grow weakJ
In such an hour it well may beF
Through mist and darkness light will breakK
And each anointed sense will seeF
