Because my grandmother's hoursA
were apple cakes bakingB
dust motes gatheringB
linens yellowingB
seams and hemsC
inevitably unravelingB
I almost never keep houseD
though really I like housesE
wish I had a clean oneF
-
Because my mother's minutesG
were sucked into the roarH
of the vacuum cleanerI
because she waltzed with the washer dryerI
tore her hair waiting for repairmenJ
I send out my laundryK
live in a dusty houseD
though really I like clean housesE
as well as anyoneF
-
I am woman enoughL
to love the kneading of breadM
as much as the feelN
of typewriter keysO
under my fingersA
springy springyP
the smell of clean laundryK
simmering soupQ
are almost as dear to meK
as the smell of paper and inkR
-
I wish there were not a choiceS
I wish I could be two womenF
I wish the days could be longerI
But they are shortT
So I write whileU
the dust piles upV
-
I sit at my typewriterI
remembering my grandmotherI
all my mothersA
the minutes they lostW
loving houses better than themselvesX
the man I love cleans up the kitchenF
grumbling only a littleY
because he knowsZ
that after all these centuriesO
it is easier for himA2
than for meK
