The decorum of fireA
Pablo NerudaB
-
We learned the decorum of fireA
the flame's curious symmetryC
the blue heat at the center of the thighsD
the flickering red of the hipsE
the tallow gold of the breastsF
lit from withinG
by the lantern in the ribsH
-
You tear yourself out of meC
like a branch that longs to be graftedI
onto a fruit treeC
peach pearJ
crossed with each otherA
fig banana served on one plateK
the leaf the luminous snailL
that clings to itM
-
We learned that the tearingN
could be a joiningN
that the fire's flickeringN
could be a kindlingN
that the old decorum of loveO
to die into the poemP
leaving the lover lonely with her penQ
was all an ancient lieR
-
So we banished the evil eyeR
you have to be unhappy to createK
you have to let love die before it writesS
you have to lose the joy to have the poemP
we re wrote our lives with fireA
-
See this manuscript coveredT
with flesh colored wordsU
It was written in invisible inkV
held up to our flameW
-
The words darkened on the pageX
as we sank into each otherA
-
We are ink bloodY
all things that make stainsZ
We turn each other golden as we turnA2
browning each other's skins like sunsB2
-
Hold me up to the lightC2
you will see poemsD2
-
Hold me in the darkE2
you will see lightC2
