We used to meetA
on this cornerB
in the same windC
It fought us up the hillD
to your houseE
blew us in the doorF
The elevator roseG
on guests of stale airH
fed on ancient dinnersI
Your room smelledJ
of roach spray and rosesK
-
In those daysL
we went to bed with MarvellM
The wind ruffled sheets and pagesN
spoke to us through wallsO
For hours I used to lieP
with my ear to your bare chestQ
listening for the seaR
-
Now the wind is tearingS
the building downT
The sheets are risingS
-
They billow through the air like sailsU
-
White with your semenV
holding invisible printsW
of the people we wereB
the people we might have beenX
they said across the countryR
disguised as cloudsY
-
Momentarily they snagZ
on the Rocky MountainsA2
then riseB2
shredded into streamersI
-
Now they are bannering westwardC2
over CaliforniaD2
where your existenceE2
is rumoredC2
