Sometimes the poemA
doesn't want to comeA
it hides from the poetB
like a playful catC
who has runD
under the houseE
lurks among slugsF
roots spiders' eyesG
ledge so long out of the sunD
that it is dankH
with the breath of the Troll KingI
-
Sometimes the poemA
darts awayJ
like a coy loverK
who is afraid of being possessedL
of feeling too muchM
of losing his essentialN
loneliness which he callsO
freedomA
-
Sometimes the poemA
can't requiteL
the poet's passionD
-
The poem is a danceP
between poet poemA
but sometimes the poemA
just won't danceP
and lurks on the sidelinesQ
tapping its feetL
iambs trocheesQ
out of step with the musicR
of your mariachi bandL
-
If the poem won't comeA
I say sneak up on itL
Pretend you don't careS
Sit in your chairS
reading Shakespeare NerudaL
immortal EmilyT
and let yourself flowU
into their musicR
-
Go to the kitchenD
and start peeling onionsQ
for homemade sugoR
-
Before you know itL
the poem will be cryingR
as your ripe tomatoesQ
bubble awayJ
with inspirationD
-
When the whole house is filledL
with the tender tomato aromaL
start kneading the pastaL
-
As you rockR
over the damp sensuous doughU
making it bend to your willV
as you make love to this mannaL
of flour and waterK
the poem will get hungryT
and comeA
just like a catL
coming homeW
when you leastL
expect herK
