Broken ivoriesA
playingB
the blue pianoC
of the seaA
-
We have comeD
from the bitter cityA
to heal ourselvesA
We have comeD
looking for a patch of beachE
not yet built into a fortressA
of real estate greedF
a coral reefG
not yet picked cleanH
of buried treasureI
not yet bare of birdsA
-
The first night in the KeysA
I dreamed I was a birdJ
soaring over a hilly cityA
soaring dippingB
like a gull or egretK
I thoughtL
'Ah this is a flying dreamM
Enjoy it '-
-
But I really thinkN
that my soulO
has been transportedP
for a nightQ
into the body ofR
a birdJ
I was flyingB
-
I woke upS
exhaustedP
arms wearyA
eyes redT
The beach was dazzlingB
with its white sandU
the sun blindingB
I seemed to know the palm treesA
from aboveR
as well as belowC
-
They root in the sandU
with elephant feetV
yet they also rootW
their delicate frondsA
in airX
these are a comfortY
as you flyZ
half bird half humanA2
through a dream of skyZ
-
Everything was newB2
to a spiritK
so dividedP
between two kingdomsA
The water was aliveC2
with fishD2
the air with birdsA
palm frondsA
clouds thunderous presencesA
of rainE2
gathering partingB
fiery sun playing throughB2
-
I knewB2
that I stoodF2
on a patch of earthG2
connected to the skyZ
that my heart beatV
with the seaA
that my arms movedH2
with the cloudsA
that my fleshI2
was finally irrelevantJ2
though it surrounded meA
as the case of a pianoC
surrounds its stringsA
while the fingers playK2
on the ivory keysA
the human musicL2
rises to the skyZ
