Endless duplication of lives and objectsA
Theodore RoethkeB
-
I have known the imperial power of secretariesC
the awesome indifference of receptionistsD
I have been intimidated by desk typewriterE
by the silver jaws of the staplerE
the lecherous kiss of the mucilageF
the unctuousness of rubber cementG
before it driesH
-
I have been afraid of telephonesI
have put my mouth to their stale tobacco breathJ
have been jarred to terrorE
by their jangling midnight musicB
their sudden blacknessK
even when they are whiteL
-
I have been afraid in elevatorsM
amid the satin hiss of cablesN
the silky lisping of air conditionersM
the helicopter blades of fansO
I have seen time killed in the office junglesN
of undeclared warP
-
My fear has crept into the paper guillotineQ
voyaged to the Arctic Circle of the water coolerE
My fear has followed me into the locked Ladies RoomR
down the iron fire stairsS
to the postage meterE
-
I have seen the mailroom women like lost lettersM
frayed around the edgesT
I have seen the Xerox room menU
shuffling in out among each otherE
like cards in identical decksV
-
I have come to tell you I have survivedW
I bring you chains of paperclips instead of emeraldsX
I bring you lottery tickets instead of poemsY
I bring you mucilage instead of loveZ
-
I lay my body out before you on the deskB
I spread my hair amid a maze of rubber stampsA2
RUSH SPECIAL DELIVERY DO NOT BENDB2
I am open will you lick me like an envelopeC2
I am bleeding will you kiss my paper cutsD2
