His Tuning Of The Night Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDE FGCHIJK KGGAL MIGCN OP GEGQ MRGSTCGUC VLGCLC

All night he lies awake tuning the skyA
tuning the night with its fat crackle of staticB
with its melancholy love songs crooningC
across the rainy air above VerdunD
the autobahn's blue suicidal dawnE
-
Wherever he lives there is the same unwomaned bedF
the ashtrays overflowing their reproachesG
his stained fingers on the tuning bar fishingC
for her voice in a deep mirrorless pondH
for the tinsel elusive fishI
brighter than pennies in water more wished uponJ
the copper colored daughter of the pond godK
-
He casts for her the tuning bar his rodK
but only long dead lovers with their griefsG
haunt him in Piaf's voiceG
as if a voice could somehow only dieA
when it was sung out utterlyL
-
He finally lies down and drowns the lightM
but the taste of her rises brackishI
from the long dark water of her illnessG
his grief is terrible as drowningC
when he reaches for the radio againN
-
In the daytime you hardly know himO
he walks in a borrowed calmP
-
You cannot senseG
his desperation in the dawnE
when the abracadabras of the birdsG
conjure another phantom dayQ
-
He favors cities which blaze all nightM
hazy mushrooms of light under the blueR
blinking eyes of jetsG
But when the lamps across the way go underS
the floorboards settleT
the pipes fret like old men garglingC
he is alone with his mouthful of ghostsG
his tongue bitter with her unmourned deathU
the terrible drowningC
-
I watch from my blue windowV
knowing he does not trust meL
though I know him as I know my ghostsG
though I know his drowningC
though since that night when all harmony broke for meL
I have been trying to tune the skyC
