Eveningsong At Bellosguardo Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABB CDEBBFBBGCBH IIIIJKEKBLBL MBNBBB

Chi vuol esser lieto siaA
di doman non c'e certezzaB
Lorenzo di MediciB
-
In the poplars' lengthening shadows on this hillC
amid the rows of marigolds and earthD
and through the boxhedge labyrinth we walkE
together to the choiring twilight bellsB
Their fugue of echoes echoes through the hillsB
and sings against this time streaked flowering wallF
where breezes coax the potted lemon treesB
the pendant yellow fruit and shiny leavesB
Beneath the flaming watercolor skyG
the cultivated terraced dropp of hillC
a gleaming city with its towers and domesB
the Arno shimmering as its drowns the sunH
-
Chameleon like I am tranformed by lightI
and wine has blurred the edges of the nightI
What gifts I give on this or any nightI
may be refracted in another lightI
You understnad this in a foreign tongueJ
but vaguely for these things will not translateK
I feel it in the cadence of your walkE
you are not whom moonlight can createK
And you will think the loosening of these thighsB
the sudden urging whiteness of the throatL
are muted but distinctly pagan criesB
and in your triumph you will fairly gloatL
-
Tonight the unplucked lemons almost gleamM
And with their legs the crickets harmonizeB
The trees are rustling an uncertain hymnN
and unseen birds contribute trembling criesB
When did the summer censor choiring thingsB
We know the blood is brutal though it singsB
