In the poplars' lengthening shadows on this hill | C |
amid the rows of marigolds and earth | D |
and through the boxhedge labyrinth we walk | E |
together to the choiring twilight bells | B |
Their fugue of echoes echoes through the hills | B |
and sings against this time streaked flowering wall | F |
where breezes coax the potted lemon trees | B |
the pendant yellow fruit and shiny leaves | B |
Beneath the flaming watercolor sky | G |
the cultivated terraced dropp of hill | C |
a gleaming city with its towers and domes | B |
the Arno shimmering as its drowns the sun | H |

Chameleon like I am tranformed by light | I |
and wine has blurred the edges of the night | I |
What gifts I give on this or any night | I |
may be refracted in another light | I |
You understnad this in a foreign tongue | J |
but vaguely for these things will not translate | K |
I feel it in the cadence of your walk | E |
you are not whom moonlight can create | K |
And you will think the loosening of these thighs | B |
the sudden urging whiteness of the throat | L |
are muted but distinctly pagan cries | B |
and in your triumph you will fairly gloat | L |
- | |
Tonight the unplucked lemons almost gleam | M |
And with their legs the crickets harmonize | B |
The trees are rustling an uncertain hymn | N |
and unseen birds contribute trembling cries | B |
When did the summer censor choiring things | B |
We know the blood is brutal though it sings | B |
