'Tis a legend of a loverB
'Tis a ballad to be sungC
In the gloaming under coverB
By a minstrel who is youngC
By a singer who has passion and who sways us with his tongueC

-
I who know it think upon itD
Not unhappy tho' in tearsE
And I gather in a sonnetD
All the glory of the yearsF
And I kiss and clasp a shadow when the substance disappearsF

Ah I see her as she faced meG
In the sinless summer daysH
When her little hands embraced meG
And I saddened at her gazeH
Thinking Sweet One will she love me when we walk in other waysH
-
-
IVI
-
Will she cling to me as kindlyG
When the childish faith is lostJ
Will she pray for me as blindlyG
Or but weigh the wish and costK
Looking back on our lost Eden from the girlhood she has cross'dJ

-
Oh I swear by all I honourB
By the graves that I endowL
By the grace I set upon herB
That I meant the early vowL
Meant it much as men and women mean the same thing spoken nowL
-
-
VII
-
But her maiden troth is brokenM
And her mind is ill at easeN
And she sends me back no tokenM
From her home beyond the seasN
And I know though nought is spoken that she thanks me on her kneesN
-
-
VIII
-
Yes for pardon freely grantedO
For she wrong'd me understandP
And my life is disenchantedQ
As I wander through the landP
With the sorrows of dark morrows that await me in a bandP

-
Hers was sweetest of sweet facesR
Hers the tenderest eyes of allS
In her hair she had the tracesR
Of a heavenly coronalS
Bringing sunshine to sad places where the sunlight could not fallS
-
-
IXR
-
She was fairer than a visionM
Like a vision too has flownT
I who flushed at her decisionM
Lo I languish here aloneT
And I tremble when I tell you that my anger was mine ownT
-
-
XR
-
Not for her sweet sainted creatureB
Could I curse her to her faceR
Could I look on form and featureB
And deny the inner graceR
Like a little wax Madonna she was holy in the placeR
-
-
XIR
-
And I told her in mad fashionM
That I loved her would inclineU
All my life to this one passionM
And would kneel as at a shrineU
And would love her late and early and would teach her to be mineU
-
-
XIIR
-
Now in dreams alone I meet herB
With my lowly human praiseR
She is sweeter and completerB
And she smiles on me alwaysR
But I dare not rise and greet her as I did in early daysR
