-
That phantoms fair with radiant hairB
May seek at midnight hourC
The sons of men belov'd againD
And give them holy powerC
That souls survive the mortal hive and sinless come and goE
Is true as death the prophet saith and God will have it soE

For who be ye who doubt and prateF
O sages make it clearG
If ye be more than men of fateF
Or less than men of cheerG
If ye be less than bird or beast O brothers make it plainH
If ye be bankrupts at a feast or sharers in a gainH

You say there is no future stateF
The clue ye fail to findF
The flesh is here and bones appearG
When graves are underminedF
But of the soul in time of dole what answer can ye frameI
Ye who have heard no spirit word to guide ye to the sameI

-
Ah facts are good and reason's goodF
But fancy's stronger farK
In weal or woe we only knowE
We know not what we areK
The sunset seems a raging fire the clouds roll back afraidF
The rainbow seems a broken lyre on which the storm has play'dF

-
But these ye urge are outward signsL
Such signs are not for youM
The sight's deceiv'd and truth bereav'dF
By diamonds of the dewM
The sage's mind is more refined his rapture more completeF
He almost knows the little rose that blossoms at his feetF

-
The sage can kill a thousand thingsN
And tell the names of allO
And wrench away the wearied wingsN
Of eagles when they fallO
And calmly trace the lily's grace or fell the strongest treeJ
And almost feel if not reveal the secrets of the seaJ

VIIJ
-
But can he set by day or nightF
The clock work of the skiesP
Or bring the dead man back to sightF
With soul invested eyesP
Can he describe the ways of life the wondrous ways of deathQ
And whence it came and what the flame that feeds the vital breathQ

-
If he could do such deeds as theseR
He might though poor and lowE
Explain the cause of Nature's lawsS
Which none shall ever knowE
He might recall the vanish'd years by lifting of his handF
And bid the wind go north or south to prove what he has plann'dF

-
But God is just He burdens notF
The shoulders of the sageT
He pities him whose sight is dimU
He turns no second pageT
There are two pages to the book We men have read the oneV
The other needs a spirit look in lands beyond the sunV
-
-
XS
-
The other needs a poet's eyeJ
Like that of Milton blindF
The light of Faith which cannot dieJ
Though doubts perplex the mindF
The eyesight of a little child a martyr's eye in doleW
Which sees afar the golden star that shines upon the soulW
