ROSH HASHANAHA
-
-
Not while the snow shroud round dead earth is rolledB
And naked branches point to frozen skiesC
When orchards burn their lamps of fiery goldB
The grape glows like a jewel and the cornA
A sea of beauty and abundance liesC
Then the new year is bornA
-
-
Look where the mother of the months upliftsC
In the green clearness of the unsunned WestD
Her ivory horn of plenty dropping giftsC
Cool harvest feeding dews fine winnowed lightE
Tired labor with fruition joy and restD
Profusely to requiteD
-
-
Blow Israel the sacred cornet CallF
Back to thy courts whatever faint heart throbG
With thine ancestral blood thy need craves allF
The red dark year is dead the year just bornA
Leads on from anguish wrought by priest and mobG
To what undreamed of mornA
-
-
For never yet since on the holy heightD
The Temple's marble walls of white and greenA
Carved like the sea waves fell and the world's lightD
Went out in darkness never was the yearH
Greater with portent and with promise seenA
Than this eve now and hereI
-
-
Even as the Prophet promised so your tentD
Hath been enlarged unto earth's farthest rimJ
To snow capped Sierras from vast steppes ye wentD
Through fire and blood and tempest tossing waveK
For freedom to proclaim and worship HimJ
Mighty to slay and saveK
-
-
High above flood and fire ye held the scrollL
Out of the depths ye published still the WordD
No bodily pang had power to swerve your soulL
Ye in a cynic age of crumbling faithsC
Lived to bear witness to the living LordD
Or died a thousand deathsC
-
-
In two divided streams the exiles partD
One rolling homeward to its ancient sourceC
One rushing sunward with fresh will new heartD
By each the truth is spread the law unfurledD
Each separate soul contains the nation's forceC
And both embrace the worldD
-
-
Kindle the silver candle's seven raysC
Offer the first fruits of the clustered bowersC
The garnered spoil of bees With prayer and praiseC
Rejoice that once more tried once more we proveM
How strength of supreme suffering still is oursC
For Truth and Law and LoveN
