Kindle the taper like the steadfast starA
Ablaze on evening's forehead o'er the earthB
And add each night a lustre till afarA
An eightfold splendor shine above thy hearthC
Clash Israel the cymbals touch the lyreD
Blow the brass trumpet and the harsh tongued hornE
Chant psalms of victory till the heart takes fireF
The Maccabean spirit leap new bornE
-
Remember how from wintry dawn till nightG
Such songs were sung in Zion when againH
On the high altar flamed the sacred lightG
And purified from every Syrian stainI
The foam white walls with golden shields were hungJ
With crowns and silken spoils and at the shrineK
Stood midst their conqueror tribe five chieftains sprungJ
From one heroic stock one seed divineK
-
Five branches grown from Mattathias' stemL
The Blessed John the Keen Eyed JonathanM
Simon the fair the Burst of Spring the GemL
Eleazar Help of God o'er all his clanN
Judas the Lion Prince the Avenging RodO
Towered in warrior beauty uncrowned kingP
Armed with the breastplate and the sword of GodO
Whose praise is He received the perishingP
-
They who had camped within the mountain passQ
Couched on the rock and tented neath the skyR
Who saw from Mizpah's heights the tangled grassQ
Choke the wide Temple courts the altar lieR
Disfigured and polluted who had flungJ
Their faces on the stones and mourned aloudS
And rent their garments wailing with one tongueJ
Crushed as a wind swept bed of reeds is bowedS
-
Even they by one voice fired one heart of flameT
Though broken reeds had risen and were menH
They rushed upon the spoiler and o'ercameT
Each arm for freedom had the strength of tenH
Now is their mourning into dancing turnedU
Their sackcloth doffed for garments of delightG
Week long the festive torches shall be burnedU
Music and revelry wed day with nightG
-
Still ours the dance the feast the glorious PsalmT
The mystic lights of emblem and the WordV
Where is our Judas Where our five branched palmT
Where are the lion warriors of the LordW
Clash Israel the cymbals touch the lyreD
Sound the brass trumpet and the harsh tongued hornE
Chant hymns of victory till the heart take fireF
The Maccabean spirit leap new bornE
