A Legend of the TalmudA
-
I-
-
When angels visit earth the messengersB
Of God's decree they come as lightning windC
Before the throne they all are living fireD
There stand four rows of angels to the rightE
The hosts of Michael Gabriel's to the leftF
Before the troop of Ariel and behindC
The ranks of Raphael all with one accordG
Chanting the glory of the EverlastingH
Upon the high and holy throne there restsI
Invisible the Majesty of GodJ
About his brows the crown of mysteryK
Whereon the sacred letters are engravedL
Of the unutterable Name He graspsM
A sceptre of keen fire the universeN
Is compassed in His glance at His right handO
Life stands and at His left hand standeth DeathP

Lo the divine idea of making manQ
Had spread abroad among the heavenly hostsR
And all at once before the immortal throneS
Pressed troops of angels and of seraphimT
With minds opposed and contradicting criesU
'Fulfill great Father thine exalted thoughtV
Create and give unto the earth her king '-
'Cease cease Almighty God create no more '-
And suddenly upon the heavenly sphereW
Deep silence fell before the immortal throneS
The angel Mercy knelt and thus he spokeX
'Fulfill great Father thine exalted thoughtV
Create the likeness of thyself on earthY
In this new creature I will breathe the spiritZ
Of a divine compassion he shall beK
Thy fairest image in the universe '-
But to his words the angel Peace repliedA2
With heavy sobs 'My spirit was outspreadA2
Oh God on thy creation and all thingsB2
Were sweetly bound in gracious harmonyK
But man this strange new being everywhereC2
Shall bring confusion trouble discord war '-
'Avenger of injustice and of crime '-
Exclaimed the angel Justice 'he shall beK
Subject to me and peace shall bloom againD2
Create oh Lord create ' 'Father of truth '-
Implored with tears the angel Truth 'Thou bring'stA2
Upon the earth the father of all lies '-
And over the celestial faces gloomedA2
A cloud of grief and stillness deep prevailedA2
Then from the midst of that abyss of lightA2
Whence sprang the eternal throne these words rang forthE2
'Be comforted my daughter Thee I sendA2
To be companion unto man on earth '-
And all the angels cried lamenting loudA2
'Thou robbest heaven of her fairest gemT
Truth seal of all thy thoughts Almighty GodA2
The richest jewel that adorns thy crown '-
From the abyss of glory rang the voiceF2
'From heaven to earth from earth once more to heavenG2
Shall Truth with constant interchange alightA2
And soar again an everlasting linkH2
Between the world and sky '-
And man was bornI2
