Weep for the martyr Strew his bierB
With the last roses of the yearC
Shadow the land with sables knellD
The harsh tongued melancholy bellD
Beat the dull muffled drum and flauntE
The drooping banner let the chantF
Of the deep throated organ sobG
One voice one sorrow one heart throbG
From land to land from sea to seaH
The huge world quires his elegyH
Tears love and honor he shall haveI
Through ages keeping green his graveJ
Too late approved too early lostK
His story is the people's boastL
Tough sinewed offspring of the soilM
Of peasant lineage reared to toilM
In Europe he had been a thingN
To the glebe tethered here a kingN
Crowned not for some transcendent giftO
Genius of power that may liftO
A Caesar or a BonaparteP
Up to the starred goal of his heartP
But that he was the epitomeH
Of all the people aim to beH
Were they his dying trust He wasQ
No less their model and their glassR
In him the daily traits were viewedS
Of the undistinguished multitudeS
Brave as the silent myriads areT
Crushed by the juggernaut world carT
Strong with the people's strength yet mildU
Simple and tender as a childU
Wise with the wisdom of the heartP
Able in council field and martP
Nor lacking in the lambent gleamV
The great soul's final stamp the beamV
Of genial fun the humor saneW
Wherewith the hero sports with painW
His virtues hold within the spanX
Of his obscurest fellow manX
To live without reproach to dieY
Without a fear in these words lieY
His highest aims for none too highY
No triumph his beyond the reachZ
Of patient courage kindly speechZ
And yet so brave the soul outbreathedY
The great example he bequeathedY
Were all to follow we should seeH
A universal chivalryH
-
His trust the People They respondY
From Maine to Florida beyondY
The sea walled continent's broad scopeA2
Honor his pledge confirm his hopeA2
Hark over seas the echo henceB2
The nations do him reverenceC2
An Empress lays her votive wreathD2
Where peoples weep with bated breathE2
The world clock strikes a fateful hourA
Bright with fair portents big with powerA
The first since history's course has runF2
When kings' and peoples' cause is oneF2
Those mourn a brother these a sonF2
-
O how he loved them That gray mornG2
When his wound wasted form was borneG2
North from the White House to the seaH
Lifting his tired lids thankfullyH
How good he murmured in his painW
To see the people once againH2
Oh how they loved him They stood thereI2
Thronging the road the street the squareI2
With hushed lips locked in silent prayerI2
Uncovered heads and streaming eyesJ2
Breathless as when a father diesJ2
The records of the ghostly rideY
Past town and field at morning tideY
-
When life's full stream is wont to gushK2
Through all its ways with boisterous rushK2
The records note that once a houndY
Had barked and once was heard the soundY
Of cart wheels rumbling on the stonesL2
And once mid stifled sobs and groansL2
One man dared audibly lamentY
And cried God bless the presidentY
Always the waiting crowds to sendY
A God speed to his journey's endY
The anxious whisper brow of gloomM2
As in a sickness sacred roomM2
Till his ear drank with ecstasyH
The rhythmic thunders of the seaH
-
Tears for the smitten fatherlessN2
The wife's the mother's life distressO2
To whom the million throated moanP2
From throne and hut may not atoneP2
For one hushed voice one empty chairI2
One presence missing everywhereI2
But only words of joy and sheerC
The people from his grave shall hearB
Were they not worthy of his trustY
From whose seed sprang the sacred dustY
He broke the bars that separateY
The humble from the high estateY
And heirs of empire round his bedY
Mourn with the disinheritedY
-
Oh toil worn patient Heart that bleedsQ2
Whose martyrdom even his exceedsQ2
Wronged cursed despised misunderstoodY
Oh all enduring multitudeY
Rejoice amid you tears rejoiceR2
There issues from this grave a voiceR2
Proclaiming your long night is o'erA
Your day dawn breaks from shore to shoreS2
You have redeemed his pledge remainedY
Secure erect and self sustainedY
Holding more dear one thing aloneP2
Even than the blood of dearest sonF2
Revering with religious aweT2
The inviolable might of LawU2
