Weep for the martyr Strew his bier | B |
With the last roses of the year | C |
Shadow the land with sables knell | D |
The harsh tongued melancholy bell | D |
Beat the dull muffled drum and flaunt | E |
The drooping banner let the chant | F |
Of the deep throated organ sob | G |
One voice one sorrow one heart throb | G |
From land to land from sea to sea | H |
The huge world quires his elegy | H |
Tears love and honor he shall have | I |
Through ages keeping green his grave | J |
Too late approved too early lost | K |
His story is the people's boast | L |
Tough sinewed offspring of the soil | M |
Of peasant lineage reared to toil | M |
In Europe he had been a thing | N |
To the glebe tethered here a king | N |
Crowned not for some transcendent gift | O |
Genius of power that may lift | O |
A Caesar or a Bonaparte | P |
Up to the starred goal of his heart | P |
But that he was the epitome | H |
Of all the people aim to be | H |
Were they his dying trust He was | Q |
No less their model and their glass | R |
In him the daily traits were viewed | S |
Of the undistinguished multitude | S |
Brave as the silent myriads are | T |
Crushed by the juggernaut world car | T |
Strong with the people's strength yet mild | U |
Simple and tender as a child | U |
Wise with the wisdom of the heart | P |
Able in council field and mart | P |
Nor lacking in the lambent gleam | V |
The great soul's final stamp the beam | V |
Of genial fun the humor sane | W |
Wherewith the hero sports with pain | W |
His virtues hold within the span | X |
Of his obscurest fellow man | X |
To live without reproach to die | Y |
Without a fear in these words lie | Y |
His highest aims for none too high | Y |
No triumph his beyond the reach | Z |
Of patient courage kindly speech | Z |
And yet so brave the soul outbreathed | Y |
The great example he bequeathed | Y |
Were all to follow we should see | H |
A universal chivalry | H |
- | |
His trust the People They respond | Y |
From Maine to Florida beyond | Y |
The sea walled continent's broad scope | A2 |
Honor his pledge confirm his hope | A2 |
Hark over seas the echo hence | B2 |
The nations do him reverence | C2 |
An Empress lays her votive wreath | D2 |
Where peoples weep with bated breath | E2 |
The world clock strikes a fateful hour | A |
Bright with fair portents big with power | A |
The first since history's course has run | F2 |
When kings' and peoples' cause is one | F2 |
Those mourn a brother these a son | F2 |
- | |
O how he loved them That gray morn | G2 |
When his wound wasted form was borne | G2 |
North from the White House to the sea | H |
Lifting his tired lids thankfully | H |
How good he murmured in his pain | W |
To see the people once again | H2 |
Oh how they loved him They stood there | I2 |
Thronging the road the street the square | I2 |
With hushed lips locked in silent prayer | I2 |
Uncovered heads and streaming eyes | J2 |
Breathless as when a father dies | J2 |
The records of the ghostly ride | Y |
Past town and field at morning tide | Y |
- | |
When life's full stream is wont to gush | K2 |
Through all its ways with boisterous rush | K2 |
The records note that once a hound | Y |
Had barked and once was heard the sound | Y |
Of cart wheels rumbling on the stones | L2 |
And once mid stifled sobs and groans | L2 |
One man dared audibly lament | Y |
And cried God bless the president | Y |
Always the waiting crowds to send | Y |
A God speed to his journey's end | Y |
The anxious whisper brow of gloom | M2 |
As in a sickness sacred room | M2 |
Till his ear drank with ecstasy | H |
The rhythmic thunders of the sea | H |
- | |
Tears for the smitten fatherless | N2 |
The wife's the mother's life distress | O2 |
To whom the million throated moan | P2 |
From throne and hut may not atone | P2 |
For one hushed voice one empty chair | I2 |
One presence missing everywhere | I2 |
But only words of joy and sheer | C |
The people from his grave shall hear | B |
Were they not worthy of his trust | Y |
From whose seed sprang the sacred dust | Y |
He broke the bars that separate | Y |
The humble from the high estate | Y |
And heirs of empire round his bed | Y |
Mourn with the disinherited | Y |
- | |
Oh toil worn patient Heart that bleeds | Q2 |
Whose martyrdom even his exceeds | Q2 |
Wronged cursed despised misunderstood | Y |
Oh all enduring multitude | Y |
Rejoice amid you tears rejoice | R2 |
There issues from this grave a voice | R2 |
Proclaiming your long night is o'er | A |
Your day dawn breaks from shore to shore | S2 |
You have redeemed his pledge remained | Y |
Secure erect and self sustained | Y |
Holding more dear one thing alone | P2 |
Even than the blood of dearest son | F2 |
Revering with religious awe | T2 |
The inviolable might of Law | U2 |
