-
Now the dreary winter's overB
Fled with him are grief and painC
When the trees their bloom recoverB
Then the soul is born againD
Spikenard blossoms shakingE
Perfume all the airF
And in bud and flower breakingE
Stands my garden fairF
While with swelling gladness blestG
Heaves my friend's rejoicing breastG
Oh come home lost friend of mineH
Scared from out my tent and landI
Drink from me the spicy wineH
Milk and must from out my handI
-
Cares which hovered round my browJ
Vanish while the garden nowJ
Girds itself with myrtle hedgesK
Bright hued edgesL
Round it lieA
SuddenlyM
All my sorrows dieA
See the breathing myrrh trees blowN
Aromatic airs enfold meM
While the splendor and the glowN
Of the walnut branches hold meM
-
And a balsam breath is flowingE
Through the leafy shadows greenO
On the left the cassia's growingE
On the right the aloe's seenO
Lo the clear cup crystallineH
In itself a gem of artP
Ruby red foams up with wineH
Sparkling rich with froth and bubbleQ
I forget the want and troubleQ
Buried deep within my heartP
-
Where is he who lingered hereR
But a little while agoneH
From my homestead he has flownH
From the city sped aloneH
Dwelling in the forest drearR
Oh come again to those who wait thee longS
And who will greet thee with a choral songS
Beloved kindle brightT
Once more thine everlasting lightT
Through thee oh cherub with protecting wingsU
My glory out of darkness springsU

-
Crocus and spikenard blossom on my lawnH
The brier fades the thistle is withdrawnH
Behold where glass clear brooks are flowingE
The splendor of the myrtle blowingE
The garden tree has doffed her widow's veilV
And shines in festal garb in verdure paleV
The turtle dove is cooing harkW
Is that the warble of the larkW
Unto their perches they return againH
Oh brothers carol forth your joyous strainH
Pour out full throated ecstasy of mirthX
Proclaiming the Lord's glory to the earthX
One with a low sweet songS
One echoing loud and longS
Chanting the music of a spirit strongS
In varied tints the landscape glowsY
-
In rich array appears the roseY
While the pomegranate's wreath of greenH
The gauzy red and snow white blossoms screenH
Who loves it now rejoices for its sakeZ
And those are glad who sleep and those who wakeZ
When cool breathed evening visiteth the worldA2
In flower and leaf the beaded dew is pearledA2
Reviving all that droops at lengthB2
And to the languid giving strengthB2
-
Now in the east the shining light beholdA2
The sun has oped a lustrous path of goldA2
Within my narrow garden's greeneryR
Shot forth a branch sprang to a splendid treeR
Then in mine ear the joyous words did ringE
From Jesse's root a verdant branch shall springE
My Friend has cast His eyes upon my griefC2
According to His mercy sends reliefC2
Hark the redemption hour's resounding strokeD2
For him who bore with patient heart the yokeD2
