These things alone endureA
'They are the solid facts ' that we may graspB
Leading us on and upward if we claspB
And hold them firm and sureA
-
In a wise fable oldC
A hero sought a god who could at willD
Assume all figures and the hero stillD
Loosed not his steadfast holdC
-
For image foul or fairE
For soft eyed nymph who wept with pain and shameF
For threatening fiend or loathsome beast or flameF
For menace or for prayerE
-
Until the god outbravedC
Took his own shape divine not wrathfullyD
But wondering to the hero gave replyD
The knowledge that he cravedC
-
We seize the god in youthG
All forms conspire to make us loose our graspB
Ambition folly gain till we unclaspB
From the embrace of truthG
-
We grow more wise we sayH
And work for worldly ends and mock our dreamI
Alas while all life's glory and its gleamI
With that have fled awayH
-
If thereto we had clungJ
Through change and peril fire and night and stormK
Till it assumed its proper godlike formK
We might at last have wrungJ
-
An answer to our criesL
A brave response to our most valiant hopeB
Unto the light of day this word might opeB
A million mysteriesM
-
O'er each man's brow I seeN
The bright star of his genius shining clearO
It seeks to guide him to a nobler sphereO
Above earth's vanityN
-
Up to pure height of snowP
Its beckoning ray still leads him on and onQ
To those who follow lo itself comes downR
And crowns at length their browS
-
The nimbus still doth gleamI
On these the heroes sages of the earthT
The few who found in life of any worthT
Only their loftiest dreamI
