I EveningA
-
Rest beauty stillness not a waif of a cloudB
From gray blue east sheer to the yellow westC
No film of mist the utmost slopes to shroudB
-
The earth lies grace by quiet airs caressedC
And shepherdeth her shadows but each streamD
Free to the sky is by that glow possessedC
And traileth with the splendors of a dreamD
Athwart the dusky land Uplift thine eyesE
Unbroken by a vapor or a gleamD
-
The vast clear reach of mild wan twilight skiesE
But look again and lo the evening starF
Against the pale tints black the slim elms riseE
-
The earth exhales sweet odors nigh and farF
And from the heavens fine influences fallG
Familiar things stand not for what they areF
-
What they suggest foreshadow or recallG
The spirit is alert to apprehendH
Imparting somewhat of herself to allG
-
Labor and thought and care are at an endH
The soul is filled with gracious reveriesI
And with her mood soft sounds and colors blendH
-
For simplest sounds ring forth like melodiesI
In this weird lighted air the monotoneJ
Of some far bell the distant farmyard criesE
-
A barking dog the thin persistent droneJ
Of crickets and the lessening call of birdsK
The apparition of yon star aloneJ
-
Breaks on the sense like music Beyond wordL
The peace that floods the soul for night is hereM
And Beauty still is guide and harbingerN
-
-
II AspirationO
-
Dark lies the earth and bright with worlds the skyP
That soft large lustrous star that first outshoneJ
Still holds us spelled with potent sorceryQ
-
Dilating shrinking lightening it hath wonO
Our spirit with its strange strong influenceR
And sways it as the tides beneath the moonS
-
What impulse this o'ermastering heart and senseT
Exalted thrilled the freed soul fain would soarU
Unto that point of shining prominenceR
-
Craving new fields and some unheard of shoreU
Yea all the heavens for her activityQ
To mount with daring flight to hover o'erN
-
Low hills of earth flat meadows level seaQ
And earthly joy and trouble In this hourN
Of waning light and sound of mysteryQ
-
Of shadowed love and beauty veiled powerN
She feels her wings she yearns to grasp her ownJ
Knowing the utmost good to be her dowerV
-
A dream a dream for at a touch 't is goneW
O mocking spirit thy mere fools are weQ
Unto the depths from heights celestial thrownJ
-
From these blind gropings toward realityQ
This thirst for truth this most pathetic needX
Of something to uplift to justifyP
-
To help and comfort while we faint and bleedX
May we not draw wrung from the last despairY
Some argument of hope some blessed creedX
-
That we can trust the faith which whispers prayerY
The vanishings the ecstasy the gleamD
The nameless aspiration and the dreamD
-
-
III WhereforeY
-
Deep languor overcometh mind and frameZ
A listless drowsy utter wearinessA2
A trance wherein no thought finds speech or nameZ
-
The overstrained spirit doth possessB2
She sinks with drooping wing poor unfledged birdL
That fain had flown in fluttering breathlessnessB2
-
To what end those high hopes that wildly stirredL
The beating heart with aspirations vainC2
Why proffer prayers unanswered and unheardL
-
To blank deaf heavens that will not heed her painC2
Where lead these lofty soaring tendenciesB2
That leap and fly and poise to fall againD2
-
Yet seem to link her with the utmost skiesB2
What mean these clinging loves that bind to earthE2
And claim her with beseeching wistful eyesB2
-
This little resting place 'twixt death and birthE2
Why is it fretted with the ceaseless flowF2
Of flood and ebb with overgrowth and dearthE2
-
And vext with dreams and clouded with strange woeF2
Ah she is tired of thought she yearns for peaceB2
Seeing all things one equal end must knowF2
-
Wherefore this tangle of perplexitiesB2
The trouble or the joy the weary mazeB2
Of narrow fears and hopes that may not ceaseB2
-
A chill falls on her from the skyey waysB2
Black with the night tide where is none to hearY
The ancient cry the Wherefore of our daysB2
-
-
IV FanciesB2
-
The ceaseless whirr of crickets fills the earY
From underneath each hedge and bush and treeY
Deep in the dew drenched grasses everywhereY
-
The simple sound dispels the fantasyY
Of gloom and terror gathering round the mindG2
It seems a pleasant thing to breathe to beY
-
To hear the many voiced soft summer windG2
Lisp through the dark thick leafage overheadH2
To see the rosy half moon soar behindG2
-
The black slim branching elms Sad thoughts have fledH2
Trouble and doubt and now strange reveriesB2
And odd caprices fill us in their steadH2
-
From yonder broken disk the redness diesB2
Like gold fruit through the leaves the half sphere gleamsB2
Then over the hoar tree tops climbs the skiesB2
-
Blanched ever more and more until it beamsB2
Whiter than crystal Like a scroll unfurledI2
And shadowy as a landscape seen in dreamsB2
-
Reveals itself the sleeping quiet worldI2
Painted in tender grays and whites subduedJ2
The speckled stream with flakes of light impearledJ2
-
The wide soft meadow and the massive woodJ2
Naught is too wild for our credulityJ2
In this weird hour our finest dreams hold goodJ2
-
Quaint elves and frolic flower sprites we seeJ2
And fairies weaving rings of gossamerY
And angels floating through the filmy airY
-
-
V In the NightJ2
-
Let us go in the air is dank and chillK2
With dewy midnight and the moon rides highP
O'er ghostly fields pale stream and spectral hillK2
-
This hour the dawn seems farthest from the skyP
So weary long the space that lies betweenL2
That sacred joy and this dark mysteryJ2
-
Of earth and heaven no glimmering is seenL2
In the star sprinkled east of coming dayJ2
Nor westward of the splendor that hath beenM2
-
Strange fears beset us nameless terrors swayJ2
The brooding soul that hungers for her restJ2
Out worn with changing moods vain hopes' delayJ2
-
With conscious thought o'erburdened and oppressedJ2
The mystery and the shadow wax too deepN2
She longs to merge both sense and thought in sleepN2
-
-
VI FaerieJ2
-
From the oped lattice glance once more abroadJ2
While the ethereal moontide bathes with lightJ2
Hill stream and garden and white winding roadJ2
-
All gracious myths born of the shadowy nightJ2
Recur and hover in fantastic guiseB2
Airy and vague before the drowsy sightJ2
-
On yonder soft gray hill Endymion liesB2
In rosy slumber and the moonlit airJ2
Breathes kisses on his cheeks and lips and eyesB2
-
'Twixt bush and bush gleam flower white limbs left bareJ2
Of huntress nymphs and flying raiment thinM2
Vanishing faces and bright floating hairJ2
-
The quaint midsummer fairies and their kinM2
Gnomes elves and trolls on blossom branch and grassB2
Gambol and dance and winding out and inM2
-
Leave circles of spun dew where'er they passB2
Through the blue ether the freed Ariel fliesB2
Enchantment holds the air a swarming massB2
-
Of myriad dusky gold winged dreams ariseB2
Throng toward the gates of sense and so possessB2
The soul and lull it to forgetfulnessB2
-
-
VII Confused DreamsB2
-
O strange dim other world revealed to usB2
Beginning there where ends realityJ2
Lying 'twixt life and death and populousB2
-
With souls from either sphere now enter weJ2
Thy twisted paths Barred is the silver gateJ2
But the wild carven doors of ivoryJ2
-
Spring noiselessly apart between them straightJ2
Flies forth a cloud of nameless shadowy thingsB2
With harpies imps and monsters small and greatJ2
-
Blurring the thick air with darkening wingsB2
All humors of the blood and brain take shapeO2
And fright us with our own imaginingsB2
-
A trouble weighs upon us no escapeO2
From this unnatural region can there beJ2
Fixed eyes stare on us wide mouths grin and gapeO2
-
Familiar faces out of reach we seeJ2
Fain would we scream to shatter with a cryJ2
The tangled woof of hideous fantasyJ2
-
When lo the air grows clear a soft fair skyJ2
Shines over head sharp pain dissolves in peaceB2
Beneath the silver arcP2
