Down the goldenest of streamsA
Tide of dreamsA
The fair cradled man child driftsB
Sways with cadenced motion slowC
To and froC
As the mother foot poised lightly falls and liftsB
-
He the firstling he the lightD
Of her sightD
He the breathing pledge of loveE
'Neath the holy passion liesF
Of her eyesF
Smiles to feel the warm life giving ray aboveE
-
She believes that in his visionG
Skies elysianG
O'er an angel people shineG
Back to gardens of delightD
Taking flightD
His auroral spirit basks in dreams divineG
-
But she smiles through anxious tearsH
Unborn yearsI
Pressing forward she perceivesJ
Shadowy muffled shapes they comeK
Deaf and dumbK
Bringing what dry chaff and tares or full eared sheavesJ
-
What for him shall she invokeL
Shall the oakL
Bind the man's triumphant browM
Shall his daring foot alightD
On the heightD
Shall he dwell amidst the humble and the lowC
-
Through what tears and sweat and painG
Must he gainG
Fruitage from the tree of lifeN
Shall it yield him bitter flavorO
Shall its savorO
Be as manna midst the turmoil and the strifeN
-
In his cradle slept and smiledP
Thus the childP
Who as Prince of Peace was hailedQ
Thus anigh the mother breastR
Lulled to restR
Child Napoleon down the lilied river sailedQ
-
Crowned or crucified the sameS
Glows the flameS
Of her deathless love divineG
Still the blessed mother standsT
In all landsT
As she watched beside thy cradle and by mineG
-
Whatso gifts the years bestowC
Still men knowC
While she breathes lives one who seesU
Stand they pure or sin defiledC
But the childC
Whom she crooned to sleep and rocked upon her kneeG
