O FRIEND who passed away while flowers diedA
Now that the land bursts into bloom againB
With vivid blossoms o'er the landscape wideA
Purple and white 'mongst grasses golden eyedA
In beauteous resurrection o'er the plainC
-
My thoughts revert to thee who liest stillD
Under the pulsing stirring glowing earthE
Not rising with the lilac on the hillD
Not waking with the sunny daffodilD
Living and breathing with no second birthE
-
In these sweet days I dream I see thy graveF
A mockery of death alive with flowersG
The delicate sprays and tender grasses waveF
Blue violets and the hardy crocus braveF
Wooed back to life by sunshine dew and showersG
-
I cannot deem that thou art lying thereH
Asleep through all these fervent days of springI
For I perceive thy spirit in the airH
Around me ever in my dream and prayerH
Enskied and hallowed by thy sufferingI
-
When thou didst walk upon the earth beforeJ
My trivial words and deeds alone were thineK
But now my holiest dreams are evermoreJ
Blended with thoughts of thee on that far shoreJ
Where thy pale girlish face has grown divineK
-
Through the dark shadows thou must go aloneL
And lo thou hast a dauntless braveryM
A most majestic resignation shownL
A valiant patience a faith not overthrownL
By the dread terror of uncertaintyM
-
The day had fled from thee for evermoreJ
Thy soul was ebbing with the waning lightN
And still thou asked aweary and heartsoreJ
The same pathetic question o'er and o'erJ
'O I am tired will I go to night '-
-
Aye thou didst go and where Thou knowest nowO
Nature is innocent as well as fairJ
Lillies as well as amaranth wreathe her browO
She hath thy soul because I cannot knowP
Where it may be I feel it everywhereJ
-
And thus the spring hath brought me flowers of worthE
O mourners cease to weep o'er empty gravesQ
Open them all no dead come trooping forthR
To fill with ghastly hosts the living earthE
Only the flowers bloom the green grass wavesQ
-
Those ye laid low with solemn rites and tearsS
Elude you while ye weep they all have flownL
And so I lay aside my doubts and fearsT
My friend in day dreams and at night appearsT
And hovers near when I am most aloneL
