In Memoriam Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAAC DEDDE FGFFG HIHHI JKJJK LMLLM JNJJ OJOPJ EQREQ SLTTLO FRIEND who passed away while flowers died | A |
Now that the land bursts into bloom again | B |
With vivid blossoms o'er the landscape wide | A |
Purple and white 'mongst grasses golden eyed | A |
In beauteous resurrection o'er the plain | C |
- | |
My thoughts revert to thee who liest still | D |
Under the pulsing stirring glowing earth | E |
Not rising with the lilac on the hill | D |
Not waking with the sunny daffodil | D |
Living and breathing with no second birth | E |
- | |
In these sweet days I dream I see thy grave | F |
A mockery of death alive with flowers | G |
The delicate sprays and tender grasses wave | F |
Blue violets and the hardy crocus brave | F |
Wooed back to life by sunshine dew and showers | G |
- | |
I cannot deem that thou art lying there | H |
Asleep through all these fervent days of spring | I |
For I perceive thy spirit in the air | H |
Around me ever in my dream and prayer | H |
Enskied and hallowed by thy suffering | I |
- | |
When thou didst walk upon the earth before | J |
My trivial words and deeds alone were thine | K |
But now my holiest dreams are evermore | J |
Blended with thoughts of thee on that far shore | J |
Where thy pale girlish face has grown divine | K |
- | |
Through the dark shadows thou must go alone | L |
And lo thou hast a dauntless bravery | M |
A most majestic resignation shown | L |
A valiant patience a faith not overthrown | L |
By the dread terror of uncertainty | M |
- | |
The day had fled from thee for evermore | J |
Thy soul was ebbing with the waning light | N |
And still thou asked aweary and heartsore | J |
The same pathetic question o'er and o'er | J |
'O I am tired will I go to night ' | - |
- | |
Aye thou didst go and where Thou knowest now | O |
Nature is innocent as well as fair | J |
Lillies as well as amaranth wreathe her brow | O |
She hath thy soul because I cannot know | P |
Where it may be I feel it everywhere | J |
- | |
And thus the spring hath brought me flowers of worth | E |
O mourners cease to weep o'er empty graves | Q |
Open them all no dead come trooping forth | R |
To fill with ghastly hosts the living earth | E |
Only the flowers bloom the green grass waves | Q |
- | |
Those ye laid low with solemn rites and tears | S |
Elude you while ye weep they all have flown | L |
And so I lay aside my doubts and fears | T |
My friend in day dreams and at night appears | T |
And hovers near when I am most alone | L |
