The ways and the woods were made pleasant | A |
And the flowering nooks of the earth | B |

And the air was as bracing as wine | D |
And the sky and the shadows and grasses | E |
Were enough to make living divine | D |

Then I saw on the ground two gray robins | F |
One with glorious flame colored vest | G |
'Neath the shade of some delicate bluebells | H |
By the breeze of the morning caressed | G |
They were singing of love in the shadow | I |
She was bashful and modest and coy | J |
And he sang to her tenderest love songs | K |
And madrigals full of his joy | J |

With each passionate musical note | M |
Like the ripple of silvery waters | N |
It gushed from his beautiful throat | M |
His whole little bird soul he offers | N |

Then he ceases awaiting her answer | L |
With bright eyes and with quivering wings | O |

And the songs died away in the distance | P |
And the forest alone heard the rest | G |
