Florence Nightingale Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCD EEFGGH IIJKKJ LLMNNM OPQFHQ RRMSSM

UPON the whitewashed wallsA
A woman's shadow fallsA
A woman walketh o'er the darksome floorsB
A soft angelic smileC
Lighteth her face the whileC
In passing through the dismal corridorsD
-
And now and then there slipsE
A word from out her lipsE
More sweet and grateful to those listening earsF
Than the most plaintive taleG
Of the sad nightingaleG
Whose name and tenderness this woman bearsH
-
Her presence in the roomI
Of agony and gloomI
No fretful murmurs no coarse words profaneJ
For while she standeth thereK
All words are hushed save prayerK
She seems God's angel weeping o'er man's painJ
-
And some of them ariseL
With eager tearful eyesL
From off their couch to see her passing byM
Some e'en too weak for thisN
Can only stoop and kissN
Her shadow and fall back content to dieM
-
No monument of stoneO
Needs this heroic oneP
Her name is graven on each noble heartQ
And in all after yearsF
Her praise will be the tearsH
Which at that name from quivering lids will startQ
-
And those who live not nowR
To see the sainted browR
And the angelic smile before it flits for ayeM
They in the future ageS
Will kiss the storied pageS
Whereon the shadow of her life will lieM
