Evening Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABA BCBCDC DED EFE FGF GHG HID IJI KLM

Rest beauty stillness not a waif of a cloudA
From gray blue east sheer to the yellow westB
No film of mist the utmost slopes to shroudA
-
The earth lies grace by quiet airs caressedB
And shepherdeth her shadows but each streamC
Free to the sky is by that glow possessedB
And traileth with the splendors of a dreamC
Athwart the dusky land Uplift thine eyesD
Unbroken by a vapor or a gleamC
-
The vast clear reach of mild wan twilight skiesD
But look again and lo the evening starE
Against the pale tints black the slim elms riseD
-
The earth exhales sweet odors nigh and farE
And from the heavens fine influences fallF
Familiar things stand not for what they areE
-
What they suggest foreshadow or recallF
The spirit is alert to apprehendG
Imparting somewhat of herself to allF
-
Labor and thought and care are at an endG
The soul is filled with gracious reveriesH
And with her mood soft sounds and colors blendG
-
For simplest sounds ring forth like melodiesH
In this weird lighted air the monotoneI
Of some far bell the distant farmyard criesD
-
A barking dog the thin persistent droneI
Of crickets and the lessening call of birdsJ
The apparition of yon star aloneI
-
Breaks on the sense like music Beyond wordK
The peace that floods the soul for night is hereL
And Beauty still is guide and harbingerM
