A dream of interlinking hands of feetB
Tireless to spin the unseen fairy woofC
Of the entangling waltz Bright eyebeams meetB
Gay laughter echoes from the vaulted roofC
Warm perfumes rise the soft unflickering glowD
Of branching lights sets off the changeful charmsE
Of glancing gems rich stuffs dazzling snowD
Of necks unkerchieft and bare clinging armsE
Hark to the music How beneath the strainF
Of reckless revelry vibrates and sobsG
One fundamental chord of constant painF
The pulse beat of the poet's heart that throbsG
So yearns though all the dancing waves rejoiceG
The troubled sea's disconsolate deep voiceG

Who shall proclaim the golden fable falseG
Of Orpheus' miracles This subtle strainF
Above our prose world's sordid loss and gainF
Lightly uplifts us With the rhythmic waltzG
The lyric prelude the nocturnal songH
Of love and languor varied visions riseG
That melt and blend to our enchanted eyesG
The Polish poet who sleeps silenced longH
The seraph souled musician breathes againI
Eternal eloquence immortal painF
Revived the exalted face we know so wellJ
The illuminated eyes the fragile frameK
Slowly consuming with its inward flameK
We stir not speak not lest we break the spellJ

A voice was needed sweet and true and fineL
As the sad spirit of the evening breezeG
Throbbing with human passion yet divineL
As the wild bird's untutored melodiesG
A voice for him 'neath twilight heavens dimM
Who mourneth for his dead while round him fallN
The wan and noiseless leaves A voice for himM
Who sees the first green sprout who hears the callN
Of the first robin on the first spring dayO
A voice for all whom Fate hath set apartP
Who still misprized must perish by the wayO
Longing with love for that they lack the artP
Of their own soul's expression For all theseG
Sing the unspoken hope the vague sad reveriesG

Then Nature shaped a poet's heart a lyreQ
From out whose chords the lightest breeze that blowsG
Drew trembling music wakening sweet desireR
How shall she cherish him Behold she throwsG
This precious fragile treasure in the whirlS
Of seething passions he is scourged and stungT
Must dive in storm vext seas if but one pearlS
Of art or beauty therefrom may be wrungT
No pure browed pensive nymph his Muse shall beU
An amazon of thought with sovereign eyesG
Whose kiss was poison man brained worldly wiseG
Inspired that elfin delicate harmonyU
Rich gain for us But with him is it wellJ
The poet who must sound earth heaven and hellJ
