Afternoon Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCADC EFGEHG IJKLJK MNOMPQ RCDRCQ STRUTR

Small shapeless drifts of cloudA
Sail slowly northward in the soft hued skyB
With blur half tints and rolling summits brightC
By the late sun caressed slight hazes shroudA
All things afar shineth each leaf anighD
With its own warmth and lightC
-
O'erblown by Southland airsE
The summer landscape basks in utter peaceF
In lazy streams the lazy clouds are seenG
Low hills broad meadows and large clear cut squaresE
Of ripening corn fields rippled by the breezeH
With shifting shade and sheenG
-
Hark and you may not hearI
A sound less soothing than the rustle coolJ
Of swaying leaves the steady wiry droneK
Of unseen crickets sudden chirpings clearL
Of happy birds the tinkle of the poolJ
Chafed by a single stoneK
-
What vague delicious dreamsM
Born of this golden hour of afternoonN
And air balm freighted fill the soul with blissO
Transpierced like yonder clouds with lustrous gleamsM
Fantastic brief as they and like them spunP
Of gilded nothingnessQ
-
All things are well with herR
'T is good to be alive to see the lightC
That plays upon the grass to feel and sighD
With perfect pleasure the mild breezes stirR
Among the garden roses red and whiteC
With whiffs of fragrancyQ
-
There is no troublous thoughtS
No painful memory no grave regretT
To mar the sweet suggestions of the hourR
The soul at peace reflects the peace withoutU
Forgetting grief as sunset skies forgetT
The morning's transient showerR
