But yesterday the earth drank like a childA
With eager thirst the autumn rainB
Or like a wistful bride who waits the hourC
Of love's mysterious bliss and painB
And now the Spring is here with yearning eyesD
Midst shimmering golden flower bedsE
On meadows carpeted with varied huesF
In richest raiment clad she treadsE
She weaves a tapestry of bloom o'er allG
And myriad eyed young plants upspringH
White green or red like lips that to the mouthI
Of the beloved one sweetly clingH
Whence come these radiant tints these blended beamsJ
Here's such a dazzle such a blazeK
As though each stole the splendor of the starsL
Fain to eclipse them with her raysK
Come go we to the garden with our wineM
Which scatters sparks of hot desireC
Within our hand 't is cold but in our veinsN
It flashes clear it glows like fireC
It bubbles sunnily in earthen jugsO
We catch it in the crystal glassP
Then wander through cool shadowy lanes and breatheQ
The spicy freshness of the grassP
Whilst we with happy hearts our circuit keepR
The gladness of the Earth is shownS
She smileth though the trickling raindrops weepR
Silently o'er her one by oneT
She loves to feel the tears upon her cheekH
Like a rich veil with pearls inwoveU
Joyous she listens when the swallows chirpV
And warbles to her mate the doveU
Blithe as a maiden midst the young green leavesW
A wreath she'll wind a fragrant treasureC
All living things in graceful motion leapR
As dancing to some merry measureC
The morning breezes rustle cordiallyX
Love's thirst is sated with the balm they sendY
Sweet breathes the myrtle in the frolic windZ
As though remembering a distant friendY
The myrtle branch now proudly lifted highU
Now whispering to itself drops low againA2
The topmost palm leaves rapturously stirC
For all at once they hear the birds' soft strainB
So stirs so yearns all nature gayly deckedB2
To honor ISAAC with her best arrayC2
Hear'st thou the word She cries I beam with joyD2
Because with Isaac I am wed to dayC2
