Cold in the earth and the deep snow piled above theeB
Far far removed cold in the dreary graveC
Have I forgot my Only Love to love theeB
Severed at last by Time's all wearing waveC
Now when alone do my thoughts no longer hoverD
Over the mountains on Angora's shoreE
Resting their wings where heath and fern leaves coverD
That noble heart for ever ever moreE
-
Cold in the earth and fifteen wild DecembersF
From those brown hills have melted into springG
Faithful indeed is the spirit that remembersF
After such years of change and sufferingG
-
Sweet Love of youth forgive if I forget theeB
While the World's tide is bearing me alongH
Sterner desires and darker hopes beset meB
Hopes which obscure but cannot do thee wrongH
-
No other Sun has lightened up my heavenI
No other Star has ever shone for meB
All my life's bliss from thy dear life was givenI
All my life's bliss is in the grave with theeB
-
But when the days of golden dreams had perishedJ
And even Despair was powerless to destroyK
Then did I learn how existence could be cherishedJ
Strengthened and fed without the aid of joyK
-
Then did I check the tears of useless passionI
Weaned my young soul from yearning after thineL
Sternly denied its burning wish to hastenI
Down to that tomb already more than mineL
-
And even yet I dare not let it languishM
Dare not indulge in Memory's rapturous painN
Once drinking deep of that divinest anguishM
How could I seek the empty world againO
