I meant to have but modest needsA
Such as content and heavenB
Within my income these could lieC
And life and I keep evenD
-
But since the last included bothE
It would suffice my prayerF
But just for one to stipulateG
And grace would grant the pairF
-
And so upon this wise I prayedH
Great Spirit give to meI
A heaven not so large as yoursJ
But large enough for meI
-
A smile suffused Jehovah's faceK
The cherubim withdrewL
Grave saints stole out to look at meI
And showed their dimples tooL
-
I left the place with all my mightM
My prayer away I threwL
The quiet ages picked it upN
And Judgment twinkled tooL
-
That one so honest be extantO
As take the tale for trueL
That Whatsoever you shall askP
Itself be given youL
-
But I grown shrewder scan the skiesQ
With a suspicious airF
As children swindled for the firstR
All swindlers be inferS
