Strange are the ways that her feet have trodA
Since first she was set in the path of dutyB
Finished and fair by the hand of GodA
To carry her message of love and beautyB
Delicate creature of light and shadeC
She gleamed like an opal on wide worlds underD
And earth looked up to her half afraidC
While heaven looked down at her full of wonderD
-
Flame of the comet and mist of the moonE
And ray of the sun all mingled in herD
And the heart of her asked but a single boonE
That love should seek her and find her and win herD
She grasped the scope of the First IntentF
That made her kingdom FOR HER no otherD
And joyfully into her place she wentF
The primal mate and the primal motherD
-
Large was that kingdom and vast her sphereG
And lightly she lifted and bore each burdenH
Lightly she laughed in the eyes of fearG
For love was her recompense love her guerdonH
And never in camp or in cave or in homeI
Rose voice of mother or mate complainingJ
And never the foot of her sought to roamI
Till love in the heart of the man seemed waningJ
-
In the broad rich furrows by woman turnedK
Man unwitting set plough and harrowL
For worlds to conquer she had not yearnedK
Till he spoke of her feminine sphere as 'narrow '-
The lullaby changed to a martial strainH
When he took her travail and song for grantedM
And forth she forged in his own domainH
Till the strange 'new woman ' the old supplantedM
-
'Strange' with the glow of a wakened soulN
And 'new' with the purpose of large endeavourD
She turned her face to the higher goalN
To the higher goal it is turned for everD
Trade and science and craft and artO
Have opened their doors to the call of womanH
And greater she grows in her greater partO
More tenderly wise and more sweetly humanH
-
Brave foremothers of freedom's birthP
Smile through space on your splendid daughtersQ
At one with liberty lighting the earthP
Their torches flame o'er the darkest watersQ
They lend a lustre to sea and landR
They sweeten the world with their wholesome gracesS
As out in the harbour of life they standR
To cheer and welcome the coming racesT
-
Brave forefathers and heroes who foughtU
Under the flag of the RevolutionH
War was the price of the freedom you boughtV
But PEACE is the watchword of EvolutionH
The progress of woman means progress of peaceW
She wars on war and its hosts alarmingJ
And her great love battle will never ceaseW
Till the glory is seen of a world disarmingJ
-
The woman wonder with heart of flameX
The coming man of the race will find herD
For petty purpose and narrow aimX
And fault and flaw she will leave behind herD
He grown tender and she grown wiseY
They shall enter the Eden by both createdM
The broadened kingdom of ParadiseZ
And love and mate as the first pair matedA2
