Wishes For A Little Girl Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL

What would I ask the kindly fates to giveA
To crown her life if I could have my wayB
My strongest wishes would be negativeA
If they would but obeyB
-
Give her not greatness For great souls must standC
Alone and lonely in this little worldD
Cleft rocks that show the great Creator's handC
Thither by earthquakes hurledD
-
Give her not genius Spare her the cruel painE
Of finding her whole life a prey for dawsF
Of hearing with quickened sense and burning brainE
The world's sneer tinged applauseF
-
Give her not perfect beauty's gifts For thenG
Her truthful mirror would infuse her mindH
With love for self and for the praise of menG
That lowers woman kindH
-
But make her fair and comely to the sightI
Give her more heart than brain more love than prideJ
Let her be tender thoughted cheerful brightI
Some strong man's star and guideJ
-
Not vainly questioning why she was sentK
Into this restless world of toil and strifeL
Let her go bravely on her way contentK
To make the best of lifeL
