When I Am Dead Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE FGFGHCHI JEJEEDEE EBEBECEI

When I am dead if some chastened oneA
Seeing the 'item ' or hearing it saidB
That my play is over and my part doneA
And I lie asleep in my narrow bedB
If I could know that some soul would sayC
Speaking aloud or silentlyD
'In the heat and the burden of the dayC
She gave a refreshing draught to me'E
-
Or 'When I was lying nigh unto deathF
She nursed me to life and to strength againG
And when I laboured and struggled for breathF
She smoothed and quieted down my pain'G
Or 'When I was groping in grief and doubtH
Lost and turned from the light o'er the dayC
Her hand reached me and helped me outH
And led me up to the better way'I
-
Or 'When I was hated and shunned by allJ
Bowing under my sin and shameE
She once in passing me by let fallJ
Words of pity and hope that cameE
Into my heart like a blessed calmE
Over the waves of the stormy seaD
Words of comfort like oil and balmE
She spake and the desert blossomed for me'E
-
Better by far than a marble tombE
Than a monument towering over my headB
What shall I care in my quiet roomE
For headboard or footboard when I am deadB
Better than glory or honours or fameE
Though I am striving for those to dayC
To know that some heart would cherish my nameE
And think of me kindly with blessings alwayI
