What Shall We Do? Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGI BJBJ| Here now for evermore our lives must part | A |
| My path leads there and yours another way | B |
| What shall we do with this fond love dear heart | A |
| It grows a heavier burden day by day | B |
| - | |
| Hide it In all earth s caverns void and vast | C |
| There is not room enough to hide it dear | D |
| Not even the mighty storehouse of the past | C |
| Could cover it from our own eyes I fear | D |
| - | |
| Drown it Why were the contents of each ocean | E |
| Merged into one great sea too shallow then | F |
| Would be its waters to sink this emotion | E |
| So deep it could not rise to life again | F |
| - | |
| Burn it In all the furnace flames below | G |
| It would not in a thousand years expire | H |
| Nay It would thrive exult expand and grow | G |
| For from its very birth it fed on fire | I |
| - | |
| Starve it Yes yes that is the only way | B |
| Give it no more food of glance or word or sigh | J |
| No memories even of any bygone day | B |
| No crumbs of vain regrets so let it die | J |
