What Gain? Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDDEE FGFGHHIIJK EHEHLLMMNN

Now while thy rounded cheek is fresh and fairA
While beauty lingers laughing in thine eyesB
Ere thy young heart shall meet the stranger CareA
Or thy blithe soul become the home of sighsB
Were it not kindness should I give thee restC
By plunging this sharp dagger in thy breastC
Dying so young with all thy wealth of youthD
What part of life wouldst thou not claim in soothD
Only the woeE
Sweetheart that sad souls knowE
-
Now in this sacred hour of supreme trustF
Of pure delight and palpitating joyG
Ere change can come as come it surely mustF
With jarring doubts and discords to destroyG
Our far too perfect peace I pray thee SweetH
Were it not best for both of us and meetH
If I should bring swift death to seal our blissI
Dying so full of joy what could we missI
Nothing but tearsJ
Sweetheart and weary yearsK
-
How slight the action Just one well aimed blowE
Here where I feel thy warm heart's pulsing beatH
And then another through my own and soE
Our perfect union would be made completeH
So past all parting I should claim thee mineL
Dead with our youth and faith and love divineL
Should we not keep the best of life that wayM
What shall we gain by living day on dayM
What shall we gainN
Sweetheart but bitter painN
