Was Is and Yet to BeA
Were chatting over a cup of teaA
-
In tarnished finery smelling of mustB
Was talked of people long turned to dustB
-
Of titles and honours and high estateC
All forgotten or out of dateC
-
Of wonderful feasts in the long agoD
Of pride that perished with nothing to showD
-
I loathe the present said Was with a groanE
I live in pleasures that I HAVE knownE
-
The Yet to be in a gown of gauzeF
Looked over the head of musty WasG
-
And gazed far off into misty spaceH
With a wrapt expression upon her faceH
-
Such wonderful pleasures are coming to meA
Such glory such honour said Yet to beA
-
No one dreamed in the vast Has BeenI
Of such successes as I shall winI
-
The past the present why what are theyJ
I live for the joy of a future dayJ
-
Then practical Is in a fresh print dressK
Spoke up with a laugh I must confessK
-
I find to day so pleasant she saidL
I never look back and seldom aheadL
-
Whatever has been is a finished sumM
Whatever will be why let it comeM
-
To day is mine And so you seeA
I have the past and the yet to beA
-
For to day is the future of yesterdayJ
And the past of to morrow I live while I mayJ
-
And I think the secret of pleasure is thisN
And this alone said practical IsO
