Vanity Fair Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDDEE FGFGHHIIEE JKJKBBLMEE NGNGOOPPEE

In Vanity Fair as we bow and smileA
As we talk of the opera after the weatherB
As we chat of fashion and fad and styleA
We know we are playing a part togetherB
You know that the mirth she wears she borrowsC
She knows you laugh but to hide your sorrowsC
We know that under the silks and lacesD
And back of beautiful beaming facesD
Lie secret trouble and grim despairE
In Vanity FairE
-
-
In Vanity Fair on dress paradeF
Our colors look bright and our swords are gleamingG
But many a uniform's worn and frayedF
And most of the weapons despite their seemingG
Are dull and blunted and badly batteredH
And close inspection will show how tatteredH
And stained are the banners that float above usI
Our comrades hate while they swear to love usI
And robed like Pleasure walks gaunt eyed CareE
In Vanity FairE

-
In Vanity Fair as we strive for placeJ
As we rush and jostle and crowd and hurryK
We know the goal is not worth the raceJ
We know the prize is not worth the worryK
That all our gain means loss for anotherB
That in fighting for self we wound each otherB
That the crown of success weighs hard and presseL
The brow of the victor with thorns not caressesM
That honors are empty and worthless to wearE
In Vanity FairE

But in Vanity Fair as we pass alongN
We meet strong hearts that are worth the knowingG
'Mong poor paste jewels that deck the throngN
We see a solitaire sometimes glowingG
We find grand souls under robes of fashionO
'Neath light demeanors hide strength and passionO
And fair fine honor and Godlike resistanceP
In halls of pleasure may have existenceP
And we find pure altars and shrines of prayerE
In Vanity FairE
