Un Rencontre Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEFEGH IJIJKK LMLMNO PQPQRR

Now ought we to laugh or to weepA
Was it comical or was it graveB
When we who had waded breast deepA
In passion's most turbulent waveB
Met out on an isle in Time's oceanC
With never one thrill of emotionC
-
We had parted in sorrow and tearsD
Our letters were frequent and wetE
We wrote about pitiless yearsF
And we swore we could never forgetE
An angel you called me alwayG
And I thought you a god gone astrayH
-
We met in an everyday styleI
Unmoved by a tremor or startJ
Shook hands smiled a commonplace smileI
With a happy new love in each heartJ
And I thought you the homeliest manK
As you awkwardly picked up my fanK
-
And I know or I haven't a doubtL
Though you did not say so to my faceM
That you thought I was growing too stoutL
I once your ideal of graceM
And ere the encounter was o'erN
Each voted the other a boreO
-
What a proof that fond passion can dieP
In this prosaic meeting we hadQ
Now ought we to laugh or to cryP
Was it sorrowful or was it sadQ
'Tis a puzzle not worthy our timeR
So let's give it up with this rhymeR
