She waited in a rose hued roomA
A wanton hearted creature sheB
But beautiful and bright to seeB
As some great orchid just in bloomA
Upon wide cushions stretched at easeC
She lolled in garments filmy fineD
Which but enhanced each rounded lineD
A living picture framed to pleaseC
-
A bold electric eye of lightE
Leered through its ruddy screen of laceF
And feasted on her form and faceF
As some wine crimsoned roue mightE
-
From wall and niche nude nymph beguiledG
Fair goddess of world wide fameH
But Psyche s self was put to shameH
By one who from the cushions smiledG
-
Exotic blossoms from a vaseF
Their sweet narcotic breath exhaledI
The lights the objects round her paledI
She lost the sense of time and placeF
-
She seemed to float upon the airJ
Untrammeled unrestricted freeB
And rising from a vapory seaB
She saw a form divinely fairJ
-
A beauteous being in whose faceF
Shone all the things sweet and true and goodK
The innocence of maidenhoodK
The motherhood of the raceF
-
The warmth which comes from heavenly fireL
The strength which leads the weaker manM
To climb to God s Eternal planM
And conquer and control desireL
-
She shook as with a mighty aweN
For gazing on this shape which stoodK
Embodying all true womanhoodK
She knew it was herself she sawO
-
She wake as from a dream But whenP
The laughter lover light and boldK
Came with his talk of wine and goldK
He gazed grew silent gazed againP
-
Then turned abashed from those calm eyesQ
Where lurked no more the lure to sinR
Her higher self had entered inR
Her path now led to ParadiseS
