Sirs when you pity us I sayA
You waste your pity Let it stayA
Well corked and stored upon your shelvesB
Until you need it for yourselvesB
-
We do appreciate God's thoughtC
In forming you before He broughtC
Us into life His art was crudeD
But oh so virile in its rudeD
-
Large elemental strength and thenE
He learned His trade in making menE
Learned how to mix and mould the clayA
And fashion in a finer wayA
-
How fine that skilful way can beF
You need but lift your eyes to seeF
And we are glad God placed you thereG
To lift your eyes and find us fairG
-
Apprentice labour though you wereH
He made you great enough to stirH
The best and deepest depths of usI
And we are glad he made you thusI
-
Ay we are glad of many thingsJ
God strung our hearts with such fine stringsJ
The least breath movces them and we hearK
Music where silence greets your earK
-
We suffer so but women's soulsL
Like violet powder dropped on coalsL
Give forth their best in anguish OhM
The subtle secrets that we knowM
-
Of joy in sorrow strange delightsN
Of ecstasy in pain filled nightsN
And mysteries of gain in lossO
Known but to Christ upon the CrossO
-
Our tears are pitiful to youP
Look how the heaven reflecting dewP
Dissolves its life in tears The sandQ
Meanwhile lies hard upon the strandQ
-
How could your pity find a placeR
For us the mothers of the raceR
Men may be fathers unawareG
So poor the title is you wearG
-
But mothers Who that crown adornsS
Knows all its mingled blooms and thornsS
And she whose feet that path hath trodT
Has walked upon the heights with GodT
-
No offer us not pity's cupU
There is no looking down or upU
Between us eye looks straight in eyeV
Born equals so we live and dieV
