He wrote for the praise of the people | G |
But the people accorded no praise | B |
Oh his songs were as blithe as the morning | H |
As sweet as the music of birds | B |
But the world had no homage to offer | C |
Because they were nothing but words | B |

Time sped And the poet through sorrow | C |
Became like his suffering kind | I |
Again he toiled over his poems | B |
To lighten the grief of his mind | I |
They were not so flowing and rhythmic | J |
As those of his earlier years | B |
But the world lo it offered its homage | K |
Because they were written in tears | B |

So ever the price must be given | L |
By those seeking glory in art | M |
So ever the world is repaying | H |
The grief stricken suffering heart | M |
The happy must ever be humble | G |
Ambition must wait for the years | B |
Ere hoping to win the approval | G |
Of a world that looks on through its tears | B |
