Three Friends Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABC DEFG HIJK LMNO PQOR SKBTU| Of all the blessings which my life has known | A |
| I value most and most praise God for three | B |
| Want Loneliness and Pain those comrades true | C |
| - | |
| Who masquerade in the garb of foes | D |
| For many a year and filled my heart with dread | E |
| Yet fickle joys like false pretentious friends | F |
| Have proved less worthy than this trio First | G |
| - | |
| Want taught me labor led me up the steep | H |
| And toilsome paths to hills of pure delight | I |
| Trod only by the feet that know fatigue | J |
| And yet press on until the heights appear | K |
| - | |
| Then loneliness and hunger of the heart | L |
| Sent me upreaching to the realms of space | M |
| Till all the silences grew eloquent | N |
| And all their loving forces hailed me friend | O |
| - | |
| Last pain taught me prayer placed in my hand the staff | P |
| Of close communion with the over soul | Q |
| That I might lean upon it to the end | O |
| And find myself made strong for any strife | R |
| - | |
| And then these three who had pursued my steps | S |
| Like stern relentless foes year after year | K |
| Unmasked and turned their faces full on me | B |
| And lo they were divinely beautiful | T |
| For through them shone the lustrous eyes of Love | U |
