Thoughts On Leaving Japan Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFBGHI BBJ KLMNOPQBBRSMTB BBJ

A changing medley of insistent soundsA
Like broken airs played on a SamisenB
Pursues me as the waves blot out the shoreC
The trot of wooden heels the warning cryD
Of patient runners laughter and strange wordsE
Of children children children everywhereF
The clap of reverent hands before some shrineB
And over all the haunting temple bellsG
Waking in silent chambers of the soulH
Dim memories of long forgotten livesI
-
But oh the sorrow of the undertoneB
The wail of hopeless weeping in the dawnB
From lips that smiled through gilded bars at nightJ
-
Brave little people of large aims you bowK
Too often and too low before the PastL
You sit too long in worship of the deadM
Yet have you risen open eyed to greetN
The great material Present Now saluteO
The greater Future blazing its bold trailP
Through old traditions Leave your dead to sleepQ
In quiet peace with God Let your concernB
Be with the living and the yet unbornB
Bestow on them your thoughts and waste no timeR
In costly honours to insensate dustS
Unlock the doors of usefulness and leadM
Your lovely daughters forth to larger fieldsT
Away from jungles of the ancient sinB
-
For oh the sorrow of that undertoneB
The wail of hopeless weeping in the dawnB
From lips that smiled through gilded bars at nightJ
