The Worker And The Work Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG IJJI KLLK MDDM NOON PQQP CRRC

In what I do I note the marring flawA
The imperfections of the work I seeB
Nor am I one who rather DO than BEB
Since its reversal is Creation's lawA
-
Nay since there lies a better and a worseC
A lesser and a larger in men's viewD
I would be better than the thing I doD
As God is greater than His universeC
-
He shaped Himself before He shaped one worldE
A million eons toiling day and nightF
He built Himself to majesty and mightF
Before the planets into space were hurledE
-
And when Creation's early work was doneG
What crude beginnings out of chaos cameH
A formless nebula a wavering flameH
An errant comet a voracious sunG
-
And still unable to perfect His planI
What awful creatures at His touch found birthJ
Those protoplasmic monsters of the earthJ
That owned the world before He fashioned ManI
-
And now behold the poor unfinished stateK
Of this His latest masterpiece Then whyL
Seeing the flaws in my own work should IL
Be troubled that no voice proclaims it greatK
-
Before me lie the cycling rounds of yearsM
With this small earth will die the thing I doD
The thing I am goes journeying onward throughD
A million lives upon a million spheresM
-
My work I build as best I can and mayN
Knowing all mortal effort ends in dustO
I build myself not as I may but mustO
Knowing or good or ill that self must stayN
-
Along the ages out and on afarP
Its journey leads and must perforce be madeQ
Likewise its choice with things of shame and shadeQ
Or up the path of light from star to starP
-
When all these solar systems shall disperseC
Perchance this labour and this self controlR
May find reward and my completed soulR
Will fling in space a little universeC
