Nor am I one who rather DO than BE | B |
Since its reversal is Creation's law | A |

Nay since there lies a better and a worse | C |
A lesser and a larger in men's view | D |
I would be better than the thing I do | D |
As God is greater than His universe | C |

He shaped Himself before He shaped one world | E |
A million eons toiling day and night | F |
He built Himself to majesty and might | F |
Before the planets into space were hurled | E |
- | |
And when Creation's early work was done | G |
What crude beginnings out of chaos came | H |
A formless nebula a wavering flame | H |
An errant comet a voracious sun | G |
- | |
And still unable to perfect His plan | I |
What awful creatures at His touch found birth | J |
Those protoplasmic monsters of the earth | J |
That owned the world before He fashioned Man | I |
- | |
And now behold the poor unfinished state | K |
Of this His latest masterpiece Then why | L |
Seeing the flaws in my own work should I | L |
Be troubled that no voice proclaims it great | K |

Before me lie the cycling rounds of years | M |
With this small earth will die the thing I do | D |
The thing I am goes journeying onward through | D |
A million lives upon a million spheres | M |

My work I build as best I can and may | N |
Knowing all mortal effort ends in dust | O |
I build myself not as I may but must | O |
Knowing or good or ill that self must stay | N |

Along the ages out and on afar | P |
Its journey leads and must perforce be made | Q |
Likewise its choice with things of shame and shade | Q |
Or up the path of light from star to star | P |

When all these solar systems shall disperse | C |
Perchance this labour and this self control | R |
May find reward and my completed soul | R |
Will fling in space a little universe | C |
