The voices of the city merged and swelledA
Into a mighty dissonance of soundB
And from the medley rose these broken strainsC
In changing time and ever changing keysD
-
I-
-
Pleasure seekers silken cladE
Led by cherub DayF
Ours the duty to be gladE
Ours the toil of playF
-
Sleep has bound the commonplaceG
Pleasure rules the dawnH
Small hours set the merry paceG
And we follow onI
-
We must use the joys of earthJ
All its cares we'll keepK
Night was made for youth and mirthJ
Day was made for sleepK
-
Time has cut his beard and loL
He is but a boyM
Singing on with him we goL
Ah but life is joyM
-
II-
-
We are the vendors of beautyN
We the purveyors for hellO
The carnal bliss of a purchased kissP
And the pleasures that blight we sellO
God pity us God pity the worldQ
-
We are the sad race victimsR
Of the misused force in manS
Of the great white flame burned black with shameT
And lost to the primal planS
God pity us God pity the worldQ
-
We are the Purpose of BeingU
Gone wrong in the thought of the worldQ
The torch for its hand made a danger brandV
And into the darkness hurledQ
God pity us God pity the worldQ
-
III-
-
We are the toilers in the realm of nightW
Long long the hours of nightW
We are the human lever wheel and boltX
That keeps the civic vehicle from joltX
And jar upon the shining track of dayF
The unremembered dayF
-
We sleep away the sunlit hours of lifeY
Unsatisfied sad lifeY
We wake in shadow and we rise in gloomZ
False as a wanton's artificial bloomZ
Is that made light we labour in till dawnH
The lonely laggard dawnH
-
Like visions half remembered in a dreamA2
A strange and broken dreamA2
Our children's faces seen but while they sleepK
Within our hearts these weary hours we keepK
We are the toilers in the realm of nightW
Long long the hours of nightW
-
CHORUSB2
-
We are hope and faith and sorrowL
We are peace and pain and passionC2
We are ardent lovers kissingU
We are happy mothers crooningU
We are rosy children dreamingU
We are honest labour sleepingU
We are wholesome pleasure laughingU
We are wakeful riches feastingU
We are lifted spirits prayingU
We the voices of the cityN
-
Out of the medley rose these broken strainsC
In changing time and ever changing keysD
