I am the voice of the voicelessA
Through me the dumb shall speakB
Till the deaf world's ear be made to hearC
The cry of the wordless weakB
From street from cage and from kennelD
From jungle and stall the wailE
Of my tortured kin proclaims the sinF
Of the mighty against the frailE
-
I am a ray from the centreG
And I will feed God's sparkH
Till a great light glows in the night and showsI
The dark deeds done in the darkH
And full on the thoughtless sleeperG
Shall flash its glaring flameJ
Till he wakens to see what crimes may beK
Cloaked under an honoured nameJ
-
The same Force formed the sparrowL
That fashioned man the kingM
The God of the Whole gave a spark of soulN
To furred and to feathered thingM
And I am my brother's keeperG
And I will fight his fightO
And speak the word for beast and birdP
Till the world shall set things rightO
-
Let no voice cavil at ScienceQ
The strong torch bearer of GodR
For brave are his deeds though dying creedsS
Must fall where his feet have trodR
But he who would trample kindnessA
And mercy into the dustT
He has missed the trail and his quest will failE
He is not the guide to trustT
-
For love is the true religionU
And love is the law sublimeV
And all that is wrought where love is notW
Will die at the touch of timeV
And Science the great revealerG
Must flame his torch at the SourceX
And keep it bright with that holy lightO
Or his feet shall fail on the courseX
-
Oh never a brute in the forestT
And never a snake in the fenY
Or ravening bird starvation stirredP
Has hunted its prey like menY
For hunger and fear and passionU
Alone drive beasts to slayZ
But wonderful man the crown of the planA2
Tortures and kills for playZ
-
He goes well fed from his tableD
He kisses his child and wifeB2
Then he haunts a wood till he orphans a broodC2
Or robs a deer of its lifeB2
He aims at a speck in the azureG
Winged love that has flown at a callD2
It reels down to die and he lets it lieE2
His pleasure was seeing it fallD2
-
And one there was weary of laurelsF2
Of burdens and troubles of StateG2
So the jungle he sought with the beautiful thoughtH2
Of shooting a she lion's mateG2
And one came down from the pulpitI2
In the pride of a duty doneU
And his cloth sufficed as his emblem of ChristJ2
While murder smoked out of his gunU
-
One strays from the haunts of fashionU
With an indolent unused brainK2
But his sluggish heart feels a sudden startL2
In the purpose of giving painK2
And the fluttering flock of pigeonsM2
As they rise on eager wingsN2
From prison to death bring a catch in his breathO2
OH THE RAPTURE OF KILLING THINGSN2
-
Now this is the race as we find itI2
Where love in the creed spells hateG2
And where bird and beast meet a foe in the priestP2
And in rulers of fashion and StateG2
But up to the Kingdom of ThinkersQ2
Has risen the cry of our kinF
And the weapons of thought are burnished and broughtH2
To clash with the bludgeons of sinF
-
Far Christ of a million churchesR2
Come near to the earth againY
Be more than a Name be a living FlameJ
'Make Good' in the hearts of menY
Shine full on the path of ScienceQ
And show it the heights aboveS2
Where vast truths lie for the searching eyeE2
That shall follow the torch of loveS2
